THREATS

The team of special ops may encounter all kinds of threats when they get into the mission area. Here we provide an overview of the kind of threat cards the players may encounter during a mission.

Terrorists
The terrorists in the threat deck all have quite different characteristics. Some are difficult to hit, others are rather easy targets but they retaliate immediately with high attack value. The special ops have the first strike (element of surprise), so if the team succeeds in taking out all terrorists in an area, the enemy will not be able to shoot back at them. Those terrorists who have survived the first strike, will fight back with their attack value. Now the Ops just have to pray that they will not be hit. With two health points, each op can only have one hit, unless Rita, the Medic, gets a chance to help them regain their strength. Countdown Special Ops can also be defined as a "living card game" since the terrorists have their own specialties, they can call for back up, get stronger during the fight, use a bazooka, etc... Here we show a few terrorists, going up from level 1 terrorists (single mission) to level 2 and 3 (campaigns and scenario play).

Three terrorists revealed
The terrorist on the left is a heavy terrorist in the level 1 threat deck. His specialty is that if he is not taken out at once, that he calls another terrorist for back up (T+1). His defense is 6 (attack value of op must equal or exceed 6) and his attack value, when he survives the first strike is 3. If taken out in close combat, the special op gets a bonus of 1 additional aiming experience. The second terrorist is from the level 2 deck. He has a sniping specialty, if revealed or attacked. The terrorist on the left is a level 3 threat card. He gets support from other terrorists before the close combat has even started (+1T). His defense is 8 and attack value is 4. But the reward is high: +2 exp.

Booby traps
In the mission area, there are also booby traps hidden between the threat cards. If you have not used your intelligence officer (Jill) very well, you are taking high risks. If you hit a booby trap, the specials ops who come in first will be hit and loose valuable live points. Some booby traps are very deadly. Going in an area alone and hitting such a booby trap results in an immediate loss of the special op character.

Civilians
Among the threat cards, we can also find friendly people as civilians. They are completely innocent and must be saved. Bob, the buster, is one of the most popular ops. His specialty is to throw in a hand grenade in the adjacent area. His hand grenades can be very efficient and time saving, but also devastating. Sometimes civilians and hostages get killed due to the adrenaline overflow of the Buster.

Close combat risks
If the special ops enter an area and there are enemies (terrorists or terrorist leaders) in this area, this immediately results in close combat. If a booby trap is present, the ops will get hurt by the booby trap first. If there are civilians or hostages in the same area, they will die first. This will result in a negative effect on the mission score. So try to prevent booby traps from going off and make sure that you do your best to eleminate all enemies present in the area, especially if there are innocent civilians in the area. They will get shot in any gun fight first. On the other hand, if you play a campaign or scenario, you must make strategic choices and sometimes just need to go into close combat to gain the valuable extra aiming skills if you want to proceed to the higher game levels.
